The Alliance for Restoration of Forest Landscapes and Ecosystems in Africa (AREECA) aims to enhance the socioeconomic, ecological, and climate-related benefits of large-scale forest and landscape restoration across Malawi and other beneficiary countries, including Kenya, Rwanda and Cameroon. AREECA is financed by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection (BMUV).
Implementation of AREECA is led by the Ministries of Environment in the four targeted countries: the Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change in Malawi, the Ministry of Environment in Rwanda, the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry in Kenya, and the Ministry of Environment, Nature Protection, and Sustainable Development in Cameroon. The initiative operates under the leadership of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), in collaboration with six consortium partners: the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the World Resources Institute (WRI), the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD), and the World Bank.
On the-ground FLR (Forest Landscape Restoration) investments are led by specific consortium partners in each country: in Malawi, FAO is working in the Ntcheu catchment area; in Kenya, WWF is focusing on the Amboseli region; in Rwanda, IUCN has focused FLR interventions in Nyagatare and Kirehe districts; and in Cameroon, GIZ is implementing restoration efforts across various regions of the country.
The World Bank's involvement in AREECA has focused on providing analytical and technical assistance in Malawi and Kenya, as well as facilitating knowledge sharing on FLR activities, including the organization of this Forum. The World Bank has also shared information about ongoing financial support for FLR in AREECA countries and sharing examples of financial mechanisms used to fund FLR initiatives in other regions.
